Depending on the final result you want, the method to follow will vary. On this page you can find a basic guide on how to install the brick slips, but do not hesitate to find inspiration in our image gallery or contact us and we will advise you on the best method to follow.

Before starting

The first thing you have to consider is how many pieces or sqm you will need, measure the surface you want to cover and decide the height of the joint between the brick slips.

Broken pieces? Use them

There is a minimal possibility that during the transport some brick slips will break. Use those pieces to finish off corners or spaces with complicated geometry. We always recommend that you order 10% more than the required quantity.

What kind of adhesive to use?

  • Depending on the resistant and waterproofing conditions of the surface where the brick slips are to be glued, the choice of adhesive and the importance of following its instructions for surface preparation will be vital. We recommend “GEL-ADHESIVE H40 WITHOUT LIMITS” of the KERAKOLL brand. It can be placed on concrete, ceramic, wood, metal, PVC.
  • Choose the same colour of cement glue as the colour you have decided for the mortar (we recommend white or light tones).

STEP 01. Once the wall is clean of dust and dirt, mark with a pencil and measuring tape the height of each row of brick slips at each end of the wall. Remember to add the height of the joint  to the measurement in each row.
STEP 02. Join all the marks with the help of a string line and pencil.
STEP 03. Have several open boxes on hand to pick up varied pieces (as it is a handmade product the tones may vary). Mix the adhesive as per manufacturers recommendation and with the help of a wide spatula apply an abundant amount to the back of the brick slip.
STEP 04. Press the brick slip with the fingers against the wall until the adhesive overflows from the sides. Remember to often move away from the wall and check the laying of the brick slips, rectifying the ones incorrectly placed.                                                                                                .
STEP 05. Brick slips can be easily cut to cover the corners of the wall.  Use a saw to create a small mark and hit the brick slip against a rigid corner.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     .
STEP 6. When the adhesive has dried a little, spread it with the help of a small brush to create a recess in the mortar.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              .
STEP 7. Brush over the joints with a soft or a wire brush  if the mortar is too dry.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 .
STEP 8 . Once completely dry, clean the surface with water and diluted hydrochloric acid base in equal parts to remove any loose mortar, using gloves and sponge.

INSTALLATION WITH BRUSHED JOINT

We recommend filling the joint with mortar, available in several colours. If you want to recreate an authentic finish, use factory sand mixed with white cement, (in the past it was done with sand and lime).

STEP 05. Brick slips can be easily cut to cover the corners of the wall.  Use a saw to create a small mark and hit the brick slip against a rigid corner.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  .
STEP 06. Mix the mortar as per manufacturers recommendations.  The more dry the mix is the less will stain the brick slip. The easiest way to fill the joint is with the help of a piping bag or a trowel and small brush.  Apply the mortar ensuring that all the gaps are filled and extend it using the round  end of a brush.
.
STEP 7. When the mortar has dried a little, brush over the joints with a wire brush.

                                                                                                                                                                          .

STEP 8 . Once completely dry, clean the surface with water and diluted hydrochloric acid base in equal parts to remove any loose mortar, using gloves and sponge.

STEP 01. Cut pieces of 8 cm long with a saw. You will get 3 pieces from each brick slip.

STEP 02. Start the intallation of the brick slips at the corner, from bottom to top. First, glue the brick slip you just cut 1.5 cm away from the corner. Next, place a full brick slip on the other side of the corner, protruding from it approximately 1.5 cm and so on.
STEP 03. The easiest way to fill the joint is with the help of a piping bag.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                .
STEP 04.  Extend the mortar and remove the excess of it using the round  end of a brush.

STEP 01. Cut pieces of 10 cm long with a saw.

.

STEP 02. Glue a full brick slip letting the same thickness of it protrude from the corner. Then, choose one of the pieces you just cut of the same tone to match the brick slip already placed.
STEP 03. Repeat this step by alternating stretchers and headers.                                                                                                                                                                                                             .
STEP 04. The same process works for larger brick slips.

                                                                                                                                                                                    .

CHAMFER JOINT

STEP 01. This method does not require cutting the pieces beforehand, take advantage of the half pieces contained in the boxes. The brick slips are placed just at the edge of the corner on both sides. Perfect for SEVILLA, ALICANTE and VALENCIA models.
